africa code week partnership (2018 – 2022)

  • Empowering Africa’s Next Generation of Coders through Collaboration and Creativity

About Africa code week

Africa Code Week (ACW) is a pioneering digital skills initiative launched by SAP in partnership with UNESCO and the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA).
Since its inception in 2015, the program has empowered millions of young Africans and teachers with essential coding, computational thinking, and digital literacy skills.

the mission of africa code week is to:
  • Bridge Africa’s digital skills gap.

  • Equip youth for the 21st-century workforce.

  • Integrate coding into national curricula.

Build local ecosystems for sustainable digital education.

STEAMLabs Africa’s involvement (2018 – 2022)

Between 2018 and 2022, STEAMLabs Africa proudly partnered with Africa Code Week as part of a continental movement to ignite curiosity, creativity, and innovation among teachers and learners.
Our collaboration focused on three key areas that align with our mission to ignite young minds through digital, green, and entrepreneurial skills training.

Focus Area What We Did Key Achievements
Teacher Training Facilitated professional learning experiences for educators in Kenya and beyond, focusing on creative computing, coding pedagogy, and inclusive teaching. Hundreds of teachers trained and equipped to integrate coding into classroom instruction.
Student Empowerment Organized hands-on coding camps, creative computing workshops, and digital innovation challenges for learners aged 8–18. Thousands of students inspired to code, innovate, and solve community challenges using technology.
Africa Code Challenge (2020 & 2021) Supported learners to participate in the continental challenge, designing projects that addressed local issues through code. Promoted youth creativity, problem-solving, and exposure to Africa-wide competitions.

Our Impact

  • Every line of code written by a child is a step toward Africa’s digital independence

Reached thousands of learners and educators through workshops and events.

Strengthened local capacity for creative computing in Kenyan schools.

Inspired the creation of the STEAMLabs Creative Coding Toolkit, a book transforming how coding is taught across Africa.

Empowered educators as digital learning champions, building sustainability within schools and communities.
