STEAMLabs AI Sills Initiative

Who we Are

The STEAMLabs AI Skills Initiative is a flagship program by STEAMLabs Africa, designed to equip educators across Africa with foundational knowledge and practical skills in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Through strategic partnerships with global leaders like Microsoft, CEMASTEA, and TeachAI, we empower teachers to understand, teach, and responsibly integrate AI in education, ensuring no educator or learner is left behind in the digital revolution.

Our Goal

We aim to train 1 million African educators by 2030 to become AI-literate, digitally fluent, and future-ready. Our initiative is focused on building capacity in AI literacy, digital citizenship, and ethical AI use while ensuring educators can leverage AI tools for teaching, assessment, inclusion, and learner well-being.

Our Principles

Accessibility
We create free and open access to AI learning opportunities for educators across all contexts.
Ethical Innovation
We promote responsible AI use that prioritises safety, inclusion, and child protection.
Teacher Empowerment
We believe teachers are at the heart of any digital transformation and must be equipped to lead it.
Contextual Relevance
We localise and adapt global AI resources to meet the needs of African classrooms.
Collaboration
We build multi-stakeholder partnerships to drive scalable impact and sustainable transformation.

Our impact

Since its launch, the AI Skills Initiative has trained over 35,000 educators across Kenya and beyond, with support from national and regional education stakeholders. Teachers have learned to use AI to enhance planning, personalize learning, and introduce students to concepts of AI ethics and applications. The program is catalyzing system-wide change by embedding AI into teacher professional development, school leadership, and curriculum integration efforts across the continent
